Why Autumn is the Real New Year for Your Home
There is a distinct shift in the air when September rolls around. For many of us, that old, familiar back-to-school feeling never really goes away, no matter how long we have been out of the classroom. It brings a natural wave of fresh energy, new routines, and a desire to refocus. While the rest of the world waits until January to set resolutions and clear the decks, a professional home organiser will tell you that September is actually the most powerful time of year to hit the reset button.
During the summer months, our homes undergo a lot of transitions. We welcome a relaxed pace, but with that comes a sudden influx of “stuff”. Holiday suitcases, beach gear, half-used bottles of sun cream, and a trailing mess of shoes and bags end up scattered across rooms.
Before the autumn chill sets in and we naturally start spending more time indoors, taking a moment to reset your home can completely transform your headspace. A tidy, organised home creates a clearer, happier mind, and decreasing the volume of items you manage is the fastest way to get there.
Why a September reset?
The goal of a September reset is not to create a picture-perfect, immaculate home that looks like a magazine spread. It is about making your space work for you, not against you. When you reduce the amount of physical clutter around you, you drastically cut down on daily decision fatigue. Every excess item on a countertop or jammed into a cupboard is a tiny decision your brain has to process. By clearing those away, you give your mind a chance to rest.
If you want to clear your home ahead of the new season without feeling overwhelmed, the secret is to change how you approach the project. Do not try to declutter your entire house in one weekend. When people try to tackle everything at once, they often pull the contents of every cupboard out onto the floor, panic at the chaos, and give up. Instead, move your thinking from the whole house to a single room, and then down to one specific area.
The Reset Your Home Needs
As you move through your home this month, focus on a few key areas that typically suffer from summer chaos. Look at the transition zones, like your hallway or entryway, which are likely drowning in summer shoes and light jackets. Put those away to make room for the heavier coats and boots you will actually need over the coming months.
Think of decluttering as a kind gesture to your future self. By taking a bit of time now to streamline your surroundings, you set yourself and your family up for a calm, organised autumn. Here is our Simple September Re-set Checklist to get you back on track!
Start with the Hallway
The hallway is often one of the first places to feel cluttered as the seasons change. Before bringing out the autumn coats and boots, clear away the things you no longer need and make space for the months ahead.
- Clear the shoe rack: Pack away sandals and other summer footwear you won’t be wearing during the colder months. Before storing everything, check for shoes that are worn out, no longer fit or simply haven’t been worn this summer. Repair, donate or recycle where you can rather than storing things you are unlikely to wear again.
- Pack away lighter outerwear: Go through the coats and jackets hanging by the door and move lightweight summer layers elsewhere to make room for warmer coats. If there are jackets that haven’t been worn all season, now is a good opportunity to decide whether they are worth keeping.
- Audit your everyday bags: Empty handbags, backpacks and work bags completely. Remove summer extras such as sun cream and travel fans, as well as any old receipts, wrappers and other bits that have accumulated over the summer. Then put back only what you actually need day to day.
- Create a drop zone: If school bags, work bags, keys, hats and scarves tend to end up scattered around the hallway, give them a designated home. Hooks, baskets or labelled containers can make it much easier for everyone to put things away when they come through the door.
Living Room
- Swap your textiles: Pack away bright, lightweight summer throws and cushion covers, replacing them with warmer, textured autumnal fabrics that will give your space a more cosy feel.
- Assess your entertainment: You’re going to be spending much more time indoors during the colder months, so you might want to look at things like board games, crafts, and family activities to make sure you’re all stocked up.
The Kitchen
- Store Summer Appliances / Gadgets: Relegate ice cream makers, lolly molds and cool bags to the top shelves. You will want to make room for things that perhaps you haven’t been using, such as the slow cooker or crock pot.
- Audit Your Pantry: Check expiration dates on your current food and discard anything old to make room for hearty soups and stews. If you plan on baking more at this time of year, maybe it’s time to stock up on new flours and sugars.
- Organise Your Tupperware: Match lids with containers and recycle any warped or stained plastics ahead of meal-prep season.
- Clear Work Surfaces: As the heart of the house, the kitchen is a place that very easily becomes a dumping ground. This is a really good time to have a clear out of all those areas that may have accumulated some clutter over the summer.
- Create A space for Homework: If you have children, ensuring they have a clear, calm space to complete homework is key and essential for concentration and progress. This may be in the kitchen or perhaps another room, but by doing this you are giving them the best possible start to the new school year.
Bedrooms & Wardrobes
- Switch the Bedding: Wash and pack away linen sheets or light quilts, and bring out heavier duvets, blankets, and flannel sheets.
- Seasonal Swap: It’s time to get those summer clothes into storage and bring out the knitwear. This is also an excellent time to see what might need a wash or dry-clean, or even repairing before you store away.
- Clear Bedside Tables: Keep only the essentials on your nightstand to create a calm, distraction-free environment for better sleep.
Bathrooms
- Audit You Suncare: Discard expired sunscreens, after-sun, and half-empty travel toiletries. SPFs only last a year anyway, so it’s better to get rid of them now rather than cluttering your space throughout winter.
- Refresh The Towels: Separate worn-out, threadbare towels to repurpose as cleaning rags or to donate to animal shelters.
- Organise Cabinets: Group morning routine products together in accessible boxes or baskets to streamline your school or work week prep.
- Check first Aid: Restock cold and flu remedies, vitamins, and plasters before the winter illnesses start kicking in.
Garage, Shed & Outdoor Spaces
- Clean Outdoor Furniture: Wipe down patio chairs, tables, and cushions (or maybe this sudden rain will do it for you!) then store them in the shed or under waterproof covers.
- Organise Outdoor Equipment: Deflate or pack away paddling pools, beach balls, and camping gear into labeled boxes, ensuring everything is completely dry first to avoid mould.
- Inspect Outdoor Lighting: Ensure path lights and security lights are working correctly before the evenings get darker.
